The ordered Garlic bread arrived in good time. Sadly it was luke warm at best by the time it arrived.
There must have been a misunderstanding in the order too as two plates arrived - either one plate short (one each for three people) or it was deemed that one plate is not enough for three.  Personally - one plate is not enough for two - barley for one!

While the butter had soaked in it stopped 1 millimeter into the dough. The bread was soft all round and (as commented by my partner) "chewy"! Possibly a reflection of not enough time in the Oven?

Presentation had everything going for it - again the napkin underneath detracting from the overall image.

In Reefton Township on August 1888, about 12 years after the discovery of gold in the area had bought about a population, wealth and technological boom, street lighting was switched on for the first time.
By “switching on” Reefton had not only beaten the rest of New Zealand to this luxury, they had also beaten the fashionable suburbs of London and New York and become the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have a street lighting system!
1886 a young gentleman named Walter Prince arrived in the town with his small electric generator in tow and held public demonstrations of its use. These demonstrations amazed the public and sparked the locals to form a company and build the Reefton Power Station.
The Reefton power station became the source of the first municipal power supply in the Southern Hemisphere supplying electricity to the booming town of Reefton for over 60 years before being decommissioned in 1949 when the town was connected to the national grid. The station was a hydro scheme generating electricity through the steady supply of water from the nearby Inangahua River.   Initially power was supplied only to the street lights and selected shops and then on Mondays to every house (Monday = Washing day) and due to increasing demand Tuesdays (Ironing day) was added.

Anyhow - nowadays Reefton is still a small sleepy provincial town = and it sports 3 pub's / hotels.
Not sure how the local population can support all three.
When we arrived for a meal there were only 3 yes three other patrons and eventually another couple arrived for a meal.  We wondered what we let ourselves in for!

The bread arrived in quick time - still hot and survived the travel = very nicely artistically arranged!
The three slices were just enough and had plenty of flavor! No timber dish - with the napkin underneath the garlic bread being the only minor distraction!
Otherwise this particular dish had everything going for it! We rate this effort very highly

The Garlic Bread arrived in good time and was very tasty - good layer of flavor!  The baguette was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside and still being warm to hot - the last piece we ate had still some warmth left!
The size could be misleading whence the image of the cutlery added! It was just the right amount for two people with the bread not being overly THICK!
The presentation was sabotaged by the napkin underneath - pity as it had everything going for it otherwise.

The bread turned out to be a loaf - of large proportion.  It arrived and at first glance you could be forgiven to think you had to butter it yourself! The little dish on the side was there just in case you needed more " flavor"! For all that it arrived luke-warm, so by the time we had eaten  the first slice, the rest was more or less cold and the additional butter no longer melted into the bread.
  sighs
Yes it was a large loaf - and 3 of us struggled to eat it all, let alone leaving room for the rest of our dinner.
The upside was a sprinkling of fresh herbs - not often seen.

The Loaf was semi crusty (at least on the top - the bottom was very hard and you needed a steak knife to cut the slices fully of!) soft on the inside.

The place had undergone 2 renovations since we visited first.  The menus stayed the same though.
Mostly a casual place to enjoy pizza's and a few other meals and it doubles as a drinking bar - presumably post visiting the Church of the Good Shepard.

In any case since we had been there previously we were keen to see if there has been any improvements.  Sadly they went backwards - almost unbelievingly so.  The bread arrived in good time - although luke warm. There must have been garlic in there somewhere  -  but it was drowned out by the Cheese flavour. The melted cheese (yes Pizza cheese) of course let go of its oil and so it became a challenge to eat this without dripping fat anywhere.  In fact we would almost have been better of using fork and knife . . . .
Served on a wooden platter with enough (butter) on the plate that would have been enough to RE-OIL several platters - enough said there!

The last effort rated a miserable 6 and we will have to lower todays effort, sadly!

We have been there twice previously and were keen to find out if this time we would get the same bread - or something very different.
Guess it is the same - kind of.
Instead of a foot long baguette (along with the long plate ) we got a shorter version on a wider shorter plate.
Unlike the previous edition they also added a napkin underneath - which showed the butter having soaked through.  To the bread itself - it came in good time and was luke warm. While the outside was crusty the inners lacked flavors. The herbs were missing in action too.
All in all this is a step backwards.  One got the impression they were trying to save on the cost of the bread / garlic etc.

Compare this effort too:

We had been there before - mainly cause the food in general is good - typical pub-fare!

The bread itself turned out ok - was reasonably fast to the table and still warm to hot!  The arrangement suffered during transport and delivery to the table.
Once again - a wooden platter - sighs - an immediate 2 points down!
Plenty of flavor - a redeeming feature and more then enough for 2 people.
The bread itself was crunchy on the outside and soft-ish on the inside. Almost wondered if this was an older (as in days old) recycled bread!
I'd have to look it up - am sure we had better there before!

Living and eating out local gives you the opportunity to revisit places  and in this case it would be our 4th visit to Caesers!

Not much has changed from our first visit some years back - still serving on a wooden platter that has seen better days - at least the original oblong shapes are now round. Sorry Jamie Olliver! Square  vs round really doesn't matter - it's still wooden - more on that later!

The bread (loaf) itself came out in reasonable quick time - maybe to quick???  Given that we were the first paying (and eating) customers to be seated - one wonders why it was barely above luke-warm.  The first slice was just warm and only just melted the additional Garlic butter. By the time we got to the second slice - it just stayed a butter spread.  Seem to remember this from a previous visit. It is almost like they are afraid to serve steaming hot bread as you might - shock horror - burn yourself!!!
The serrated knife was needed to slice of the slices - at the bottom - being already decently precut. One could easily just have ripped them apart. The downside with timber and serrated edges is that you dig into the timber as you cut.  I am always left wondering how good their washing / hygiene in the kitchen is.  At least this board has still some life left - not like the last one that had a long deep split (which again - coming form someone who has worked in a kitchen and is a woodworker just means they did not look after the timer properly)

Flavor a plenty and more then enough for 2 people.
Shame - the loaf itself (without any other considerations and garlic) is quite nice to eat.

We haven't been out much lately so when a work function came up we gladly went.  Joe's is a relatively new Place in Rangiora, so was not sure what to expect!   The meals were fabulous and if you ever want to eat a decent Salmon - I can recommend that.
Anyhow - to the Garlic bread

It was not listed under entree's, but a "Joe's Roll with Garlic" was listed as a side dish to accompany the mains.  We asked the question and yes - we can have it as an entree, so we ordered that.  It came out in good time - still hot. Slightly soft on the outside (it's only blemish really) and had plenty of flavor.

The picture tells the rest of the story.  Not often you get a garlic bread that is as close to perfect as this one.
We give it 19.8 ( a tiny deduction for the outside of the bread not being crispy) and no doubt will go back there one day.

For the rest of the Garlic breads - this is the standard you are aiming at!

We have lived in the area for nearly 30 years and have seen several transformations of this particular venue - the last one being "Little Italy" themed.
With the new layout and so forth we were keen to give this one another go (seeing the last few visits to "Little Italy" proofed to be less satisfactory re Garlic Bread)  in the hope that perhaps there is a new management - or at least - a new cook in residence.

The Garlic bread is advertised as:

Bishop’s Garlic Loaf    $ 9.50
A Honey grain loaf served with homemade garlic and herb butter.

I should have known.  This particular loaf reminded me at the last loaf we have eaten - in fact such are the similarities I am beginning to wonder if this is the same chef - Ex Omalley's in Whitianga
See here ---->   garlic bread at grace omalleys

In any case - the 'loaf' arrived and while there was a super crusty outside and soft fleshy inside - the bread itself was luke warm - at best.  That is a bit of a downer ESPECIALLY as you had to butter your own slice (absolutely ZERO garlic butter in the loaf to start with) - which of course was never going to melt into the bread . . . . .
Again - the similarities with O'Malleys in Whitianga . . .
We shall leave it here and rate it the same!

As an aside - I am aware of the debate about "Constructing" your meal / coffee etc sweeping the globe.  It seems some places are offering their creations in a semi made state and you are invited to "construct" your dish to your own likening.  This is particular popular with some Coffee/ Barrister's in Australia.  There are some folks who say this is a bit of a gimmick.  Others say you eventually get something made exactly to your liking - by yourself!

My take on this is this:  - I PAY $$$$ to have someone prepare and cook a meal for me!  I do not pay someone $$$ and then having to do half of the work myself. It is not like I get a discount for the product/meal (reduced labour cost?)  If I wanted to do "construct" a meal - I could just stay at home and cook there instead. . . .
So it is disappointing to see a NON-buttered garlic bread on offer and having to butter it up myself . . . .

The bread itself was from a sourdough bread - or at least so it looked like and almost tasted like that. Certainly not the usual French baguette cut up.
With both sides buttered and melted there was so much flavor and it did taste just right!

The crust was - well crusty and the bread itself still warm and soft!
We rate this highly with the only detraction being, again,  the napkin underneath which did sport an oil - hmmm rather a butter stain.  I would rather that sits on just the porcelain plate . . . .

After a short hic-up the Garlic Bread arrived just after mains was served - so we had it with mains rather than as Entree.

The bread was buttered on one side only and not overly hot even though it came straight from the kitchen.

Despite that, there was plenty of flavor to enjoy with just a tiny little bit of sprinkling of herbs noticeable!  Crusty on the outside and soft-is in the middle.

The plate added and the napkin under it detracted.  The portions were good enough for two people and certainly added to our main meal!

Would have rated reasonably high except for the fact that the waitress failed to note our order and we had to chase this once mains arrived.  So 2 points off for that I think.

We had been there previously in 2013 and it was time to go for a return visit and enjoy the good Greek food.

The menu was pretty much the same and so was the "pita" garlic bread.

These comments from the last visit :
"the garlic bread is sold as Garlic 'Pita' bread and such it was - cut as can be seen in the picture half way and then again through the middle and nicely filled with garlic butter and some herbs. The Pita bread was just your average pita bread.  Nothing fancy there. It was to hot to touch and the supplied knife and fork came in handy. There was ample to eat for two people. The presentation - given the rest of the "themed restaurant", fell short of the expectation, and was very plain and simple. Overall - this would be a slightly above average bread. "

We still had the same wicker basket and napkin underneath. If anything - the arrangement had improved slightly.  The bread was still to hot to handle to start with and the knife / fork came in handy again!
So no real change from our last visit.
Oh - the orders were taken by hand / paper - the electronic order-system from last visit was not to be found . . . . .

You have to check out their website.  Short story;- the Dude butchered his Campsite in search for the mythical warm healing waters - which he eventually found at 600meters below.  As the story goes - the water is 16 000 years old.  hmmmmmm

Apart from the soak and spa - there is attached a Restaurante were you can book a "Dip and Dine" package - pre order your meal for a fixed time and price - go for that dip urm soak in the mineral rich warm water (and if so inclined get pool side drinks service)  - then relax for a meal!  Trust me - this was divine!

Anyhow to the Garlic Bread - it came in a timely manner - was warm/hot and crusty on the outside - yet soft fleshy on the inside.  Plenty of flavor too!!! Just 4 slices - actually the right amount for 2 people and nicely arranged on a porcelain plate.  The Black stripes added color - hmm forgot to ask what they actually were - their flavor blended in - I am tempted to say perhaps some soy-sauce???

Apart from the one slice which had "up" righted itself during transport - this is pretty near to perfect! In fact we had enjoyed the previous experience so much - this was our second visit there in the short space of time we had available. No doubt will repeat this next time we are in Whitianga!  Might even go for a Spa or something . . . .

This should proof to be urm a major urm disappointment.

Disaster really.

To start with, we had to wait more then one hour for   a n y   food to come out from the kitchen - even though the couple ordering in front of us got theirs in less then 10 minutes. Go figure! When we queried our order it was washed away with "coming to grips with the kitchen".  At least - so it appeared- we were not the only ones waiting for food - I counted at least 5 tables with people waiting and waiting.

When the bread - urm - loaf finally  came, it turned out to be even more of a disappointment.  It had no repeat no garlic butter inside.  ok - so well thats a first having to butter up your own - at least you get to choose how much flavor you want.  Sadly the loaf itself was at best luke-warm (or a couple of degrees away as having come from a fridge)  so for the first slice the Garlic Butter kinda melted - the second helping, well it never did melt at all - we ate the raw garlic butter on top of the cold bread.   Ever ate raw garlic???  Very salty and sulfuric . . .
Being served on a wooden platter (where it was best NOT to look to closely
at the timber - you might find bits) urm did not help either!

So in terms of everything a big fat zero and the knowledge it will / must get and indeed can get better.

We live in Christchurch so to eat out in Rangiora is a bit of a stretch. However on this occasion we had good reason to visit and enjoyed a good meal.

Naturally we ordered the Garlic bread as starter.

Firstly a 'starter' is just meant to be that - a starter.  As you can see there are nine slices of bread. By the time we munched through this lot we were almost full already.  A friend of mine once made a rather dry observation that the more filling the starters are the less quality/quantity of mains you can expect . . .     We hoped this did not come to fruition.

Secondly - I know it is more of a country pub then Hotel - so the rustic timber bread platter is understandable. Yet it is out of sync with the rest of the meal all coming on semi fancy plates.  Surely if you can afford to buy special plates - you can spring for oblong garlic bread platter's.  I worked in the industry - these timber plates are so hard to keep clean . . . . . .

Anyhow - to the garlic bread itself!
I suspect the garlic came (noticeable uniformly) pre-chopped from a bottle and is added into the creamed butter. On the upside - both sides were buttered and a liberal sprinkling of fresh herbs did help.  The crust was - well crusty and the bread itself semi soft if on the cool side.  It certainly did not come straight from the oven, and as you can see the arrangement did suffer in transport . . .

Overall - we rate this as pretty average . .

We had reason to come back again to the same place!!  And as per previous second visit - you would expect to be served the same this time round- yes?!?   We did get the same bread - yet again just with one major difference - the arrangement!!

Further - there were only three paying customers to be served for Dinner and the Garlic bread took its time coming to the table.
When it did arrive it was semi-lukewarm with blobs of butter still visible. Given the tiny patronage present at the restaurant, there is really no excuse for sending out a half baked lukewarm garlic bread.

Other then that - it was all exactly the same, so we rate this effort even less then the two previous efforts

So this was last weeks post entry -   see below -   and we had reason to come back the following weekend to the same place!!  You would expect to be served the same - yes?!?   We did get the same bread - just with one major difference - the arrangement!!
Now the only difference from last week was that the place was busier - which goes begging the question - does the chef have time for artistic flair - ONLY if the place is quiet??? Certainly felt like that.  Shame really

Other then that - it was all exactly the same, so we rate it the same - perhaps a half point off for lack of consistency?

Have fun

-----------------------------------------------------
From last week:

When visiting the Westcoast Bar and Grill you know the meals are not only tasty but also in a typical pub fashion, rather plentiful.  The Garlic bread was (as is the rest of the menu) rather colourful described and sold as:

Granity Garlic Bread    $9
This big loaf is perfect to share before your meal!

Having previously been to places that sold "loaves" we expected a rather large bread.  A big loaf it should proof to be. This image does not truly convey the size of it. The plate would have been slightly larger then your average dinner plate.
The slices in itself were large and cut about just short of an inch thick.
There were three of us present and we struggled to eat it all.  It would have been easily enough for 5-6 people.  Bear in mind that the mains are just as large and you might wonder if you can eat it all.

The bread arrived in good time - sadly a bit just below lukewarm.  It must have sat on a counter for a couple of minutes, waiting to be delivered to our table.  The slice of bread itself was buttered on both sides and contained plenty of fresh garlic and herbs!  It was pleasing to see a porcelain plate, with the drawback being the paper napkin underneath - getting a bit soaked from the bread and the oily butter.  The presentation is simple enough and with the "loaf" being precut - all you had to do is grab a slice and eat - no getting fingers greasy with trying to break off or  cutting away a slice.

Despite the almost perfect presentation and good taste we rate this as average with room for improvement.
